Can I bleach my teeth with Charcoal?

Jun 4 • 1 minute read

A number of my patients ask me about bleaching their teeth on their own.  The do it yourself to save money is a common occurrence in our society.  U tube videos are out there on everything.  The internet is fill with articles like  " Mom bleaches her teeth with common household product."  I have seen internet articles  using charcoal, liquid bleach. fruit and others.

Before bleaching your teeth,  you need to understand that your teeth are composed of three layers.  The outer layer is called enamel that protects the next layer in called  the dentin.  The enamel and dentin protect the inner layer of pulp tissue, which is composed of a nerve and blood vessel.   Injury to the enamel or dentin will lead to hot and cold sensitivity and even the need for a root canal.

As we age our gum recedes exposing more of our the roots on our teeth.  The more of root showing the greater the chance for sensitivity after bleaching techniques.   Charcoal or activated charcoal in dental products is too abrasive to safely bleach you teeth with.  The same is true with lemons which have acid that also will remove enamel.

The charcoal with remove the outer layer of enamel exposing the dentin.  people are sometimes encouraged when trying it because at first they may remove some surface stain. When they continue it is impossible to remove an even layer and quickly they damage their teeth lading to yellow teeth and the need for expensive restorative dentistry.

I will talk about safer options to bleach your teeth in my article   " How to safely bleach your teeth."
